National Consensus Project Clinical Practice Guidelines for Quality Palliative Care, Fourth Edition, Being Developed

It has been four years since the National Consensus Project’s Clinical Practice Guidelines for Quality Palliative Care was updated.  Since then palliative care has expanded into new settings and is being offered by various types of organizations, such as health systems, office practices, cancer centers, dialysis units, home health agencies, hospices, long-term care providers, social services organizations and more.

In January 2017, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation awarded the National Coalition for Hospice and Palliative Care  a two-year grant to support the development, endorsement, dissemination and implementation of the National Consensus Project Clinical Practice Guidelines for Quality Palliative Care, 4th edition.  The goal of the 4th edition is to improve access to quality palliative care for all people with serious illness, regardless of setting, diagnosis, prognosis, or age. To officially launch this effort, the National Coalition for Hospice and Palliative Care hosted a Stakeholder Strategic Directions Summit in Chicago, IL, June 29-30, 2017 that was attended by HealthCare Chaplaincy Network senior staff The Rev. George Handzo, Director of Health Services Research and Quality who is a member of the projects Steering Committee and The Rev. Sue Wintz, Director of Professional and Community Education who is a member of the Writing Workgroup for the new guidelines. The Summit brought together over 60 representatives from 43 national organizations that covered a broad range of care settings, provider/professional associations, accrediting bodies, payers, and community services organizations to:
